Karnatakas one-pot wonder - rice, lentils and vegetables cooked together with an aromatic homemade spice powder. Served piping hot with ghee and papad.

Pressure cook rice and toor dal together for 4 whistles until very soft and mashable.

Boil vegetables until tender. Add tamarind paste, jaggery, bisi bele bath powder and salt. Cook 10 minutes.

Combine cooked rice-dal with vegetable mixture. Add water to get a porridge-like consistency.

For tempering: heat ghee, crackle mustard seeds, fry cashews golden. Add curry leaves and dry red chillies.

Pour tempering over bisi bele bath. Serve immediately with ghee drizzled on top and papad.
